OSHA Guidelines 1910.178 require that all operators of powered industrial trucks (forklifts) must be trained and authorized before using any forklift at a job site. Forklift University offers several programs to help companies comply with these requirements.
OSHA allows online operator training, which can be completed in about an hour. Use one of the online options below, and you or your operators can take an online class to satisfy the formal training part of the requirement. You will still need a qualified person to perform a skills assessment prior to allowing the operator to use the lift.
Online classes are valid for three (3) years, and most include a digital license and a hard plastic operator license. *MEWP Occupant and Supervisor DO NOT include the plastic card.
All the classes are offered in English and Spanish.
For companies that require instruction at their facility, Forklift University has trainers all over the country who can perform the required operator training at your facility. Our experienced operators will conduct classes with your operators (new or experienced) and perform operator evaluations on the lifts at your facility.
Training classes are 100% OSHA compliant and provide the operator with a three (3) year certification card and operator evaluation documents ensuring that your organization has qualified operators. Trainers can also perform driver training at your facility for companies that have new equipment or new operators that have never driven a powered industrial truck. (There may be travel charges associated with this training)
While many operators already have the experience to safely operate a forklift, many people are looking for new opportunities in the essential industry of material handling. Those who have been out of the industry for a while or who have never driven may benefit from a hands-on driving course.
Our exclusive hands-on driving facility is in Las Vegas. We provide in-person sit-down forklift training by appointment. These classes are a full day of instruction and driving, and class size is limited to provide maximum seat time for our students.
If you are looking for a forklift driving course, please contact our office by phone at 888-674-9992, and our career counselors can help you to see if a driving class will be beneficial to your career.
Forklift University works with job placement and state agencies that can help those who qualify to pay for training programs.
OSHA forklift violations are still in the top 10 of citations every year. Operators are still being hurt and killed every day. Even with the new and better training most companies have adopted over the last 10 years, lack of skill and training are still major contributors to these statistics.
Forklift Simulators have been around for over 5 years now, but those systems have been more of a novelty rather than a real training tool. Build by gamers that treated forklift training like a game, without any real concept of how to teach new operators, those systems lacked the real simulations and skill building needed for better driver outcomes.
Forklift University had sold one of these systems for many years, but the programmers, and gamers in the company did not want to adjust to the needs of our industry. So Forklift University partnered with a new company to build a Virtual Forklift Simulator that truly was designed by experienced forklift trainers. This collaboration was not a single sided venture, however. Included in the design partnership was one of the largest forklift dealers in the USA, Wolter Inc., who had a similar experience with the same VR developers.
For over 2 years this development team built a brand new, from scratch Virtual Forklift Simulator.
The result was not only 1 system, but 2. NEXUS which is student centric and designed to teach the hands on skills new drivers and experienced drivers that need a reminder need. Based on the training experience of real forklift trainers with over 20 years of training experience each, NEXUS is modular and drill based, and that is what this short video is about. There are over 30 different modules, with drills, attachments training, flatbed trailer and standard truck loading, speed doors, cantilever racking, many different load types and more.
The second, not shown here is Virtual Forklift LIVE, a truly interactive VR training system. This system replicates the every day forklift certification and evaluation class that trainers teach every day. Students AND Instructors are placed in the same environment together and the trainer can interactively run any training PowerPoint (classroom training) and then can get into the simulator platform and perform the driving evaluation or interactive training that is required by OSHA.
This system mimics the real life "cert and eval" process. And unlike any other VR Simulator on the market, it can be done without physical limits, meaning that the instructor can be in Wisconsin, the student in Arizona and another student anywhere across the world. There are no student or instructor limits and everyone with a headset can join in.

ONSITE Train-The-Trainer. *
Our Train-The-Trainer programs at Forklift University are not just advanced and flexible, they're also highly practical. Large and small companies, forklift dealers, and other training companies all benefit from the in-depth training materials, ease of presentation, and quality of the training programs.
Trainers will spend time with our experienced instructors and learn not only how to deliver the training but also how to protect your organization from OSHA fines and operator injuries. Training is available for all Powered Industrial Trucks (forklifts) and Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (aerial lifts), now called MEWP.
Trainers have access to all videos and materials 24/7. Unlike other companies' training materials, all training forms, manuals, and tests are in MS Word and can be modified and branded for your organization.
Companies seeking specialized training programs can count on Forklift University to deliver custom training materials, computer-based training systems, and targeted training videos. While the standard training materials are OSHA compliant, it is best to develop a custom training program for your organization and processes.
With a computer-based LMS (Learning Management System) and developers who not only understand our industry but also the best way to deliver training to your operators, Forklift University is far superior to even dealer training programs.
Our Hybrid Training system is designed to alleviate your trainers from mundane tasks, allowing them to focus on crucial site safety training and hands-on evaluation. This not only reduces their workload but also ensures a more effective training process.
We develop forklift and aerial lift training that is targeted to each location and equipment in different departments. Training systems can be multilingual and cross-country.
All of the training programs are translated for Spanish speakers, but programs have been developed in custom environments for other languages. If you need Spanish materials, consider it done, but if you need something special, let us know, and we will work out the translation so your operators can learn in the language that is best for their learning environment.
All online classes come with a digital card that can be printed at the end of the test and a hard plastic license with the operator's picture (the picture must be sent in to process). All operator training and trainer classes include a license with the lift equipment listed.
Trainers can also purchase custom company licenses for the operators at the company providing a professional branded forklift license. This service also comes with renewal tracking and document storage, so your next OSHA audit will be easy as you will have all the documents required by OSHA.

General Forklift Safety
OSHA 1910.178 for Powered Industrial Trucks or P.I.T.'s is the main guideline companies must follow if the facility uses any type of forklift. This class satisfies the operator's formal training requirements for general forklift safety. The training in this class only covers safe operations for Class I, IV, V, and III trucks. These are called Sit-down and Standup Counterbalance, Electric Pallet Jacks, Walkie Riders, and Walkie Stacker-Type lifts. The training reviews both propane and electric-powered lifts.
Sand Up Reach
Stand Up Reach forklift certification which have a slimmer chassis and hold their loads closer to the wheelbase, making them well-designed for narrow spaces.
Order Picker / Turret Truck
Order Picker certification is for a type of lift truck used as a more efficient and safer replacement for ladders and scissors lifts when retrieving stock by hand.
Rough Terrain
Rough Terrain forklifts can be telescopic boom, telehandlers, or vertical mast similar to warehouse lifts, with greater capacities. These forklifts are referred to by many names, and operators of these lifts require different training than operators of standard mast-type forklifts.
Electric Pallet Jack
The electric pallet jack operator training class covers the standard electric pallet jack, walkie-rider, and walkie-stacker lifts. These are similar-type lift systems to the electric pallet jack, and operators of any or all of them are required to have OSHA powered industrial truck safety training.
NOT FOR Sit Down or Other Types of Forkift
Truck Mounted - Piggyback
Truck-mounted forklifts, also known as piggybacks, donkeys, and other names, are construction support forklifts carried on the back of trucks. Used to unload building materials at a job site, these lifts have unique characteristics since they are NOT counterbalanced.
MEWP (Aerial) All Lift Types
MEWP (aerial lift) operator class covers all classifications of mobile elevating work platforms. This includes aerial booms, straight and articulating, scissor lifts, personal (single-person) lift devices, bucket trucks, and forklift work platforms.
Fall Protection
This fall protection class is designed to support company training of personnel who utilize fall protection in their jobs.
Advanced Flagger
Advance Flagger course provides those in a flagger position with knowledge and understanding to promote safer and more compliant work activity. This course meets OSHA requirements and guidelines.
